Coquille Valley Summary
Thank you all for participating in our 12th count. Our good weather and good turnout resulted in 145 species and over 50,000 birds, the largest numbers being waterfowl.
One new species, Heermann’s Gull, was added to our all-time list. Based on numbers at hand, we set new high record counts for 26 species: Cackling Goose (needs adjustment), Canada Goose, Eurasian Wigeon, Wild Turkey, Brown Pelican, Brandt’s Cormorant, Bald Eagle, Prairie Falcon (1), Northern Harrier, Cooper’s Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Rhinoceros Auklet, Rock Pigeon, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Western Screech-Owl, Great Horned Owl, N. Saw-whet Owl, Anna’s Hummingbird, Northern Shrike, Western Bluebird, Black-capped Chickadee, Golden-crowned Sparrow, White-throated Sparrow, Purple Finch, American Goldfinch and House Sparrow. Common Goldeneye and Cinnamon Teal tied records.
Exceptionally low counts were recorded for White-winged Scoter, Dunlin and Wilson’s Snipe.
It was interesting to see how close estimates were for the flock of Cackling Geese that flew noisily up and down the lower valley several times. Estimates from four teams that saw it were 70, 70, 75 and 85 birds, which is pretty tight and a tribute to careful observation. I’ll adjust that to 75 in the final submission.
For the second year in a row, Red-shouldered Hawk outnumbered Red-tailed Hawk. This may be the normal state of affairs in the valley now.
The most surprising misses were Greater Scaup (10/12), Glaucous Gull (9/12), Black-legged Kittiwake (9/12), Northern Pygmy-Owl (9/12), Greater Yellowlegs (8/12) and Red Crossbill (7/12).
There are really only two significant variables on this count, other than the weather in general. These are seabirds and owls. This year we found four of the five expected owls (missing Pygmy, Barred being a sixth species probably in the circle) but for the second year in a row, seawatching was not very productive, with no tubenoses and no small alcids. For next year, we might see about staking out Pygmy and Barred Owls in the weeks before the count. Both are vocal and responsive when present.
Next year’s calendar is hard because Christmas falls on a Saturday. I have discussed count timing with Jim Rogers, whose Port Orford CBC is the senior south coast count (besides Coos Bay, which is always the first Sunday of the period) and therefore gets first choice of dates. Jim wants Sunday Dec. 26, so Coquille Valley will be held Saturday, January 1, 2011 to kick off the year right.
See you there !
